My Final Project at Atlassian: A Learning Platform Built for Growth

I’m incredibly excited to see the Atlassian Learning application officially live in the newly unified Atlassian Community!

In my final project at Atlassian, I had the opportunity to lead the effort to build a fully custom, composable learning platform — no off-the-shelf LMS involved. The goal was to deliver a unified experience that encourages users to learn, earn recognition, and connect with others across the ecosystem — all while giving Atlassian deeper control, performance, and visibility into learning engagement.

🏗️ Why We Built It

Inspired by Salesforce's Trailhead customer learning platform, we knew we didn’t want to just spin up another training portal. We wanted a platform that felt distinctly Atlassian — fast, flexible, modern, and deeply integrated into the broader product and community experience.

We built the platform using:

• Contentful as the headless, composable content foundation
• BI WORLDWIDE’s Bunchball Nitro engine for gamification and rewards
• Atlassian’s UI platform for a seamless, branded user experience

This stack gave us the ability to:

• Own the brand and UX end-to-end
• Deliver blazing-fast performance
• Capture meaningful analytics on every interaction
• Design composable content that could show up in-product, in AI-powered search, or inside a custom app
• Build modular, bite-sized learning (called Lessons) that are elegant, easy to consume, and optimized for search engine

📈 A Simple Experience That Scales

What we ended up with is a learning experience that’s simple on the surface — but incredibly powerful under the hood. Here's how it supports a full customer learning funnel:

1. Discover a single Lesson worth sharing? No login required — just send and watch it spread.
2. Want to go deeper? Log in with your Atlassian account, complete the Course, and earn your first badge.
3. Looking to level up? Follow guided Learning Paths made of multiple Courses — earn more badges and unlock advanced recognition.
4. Advancing your career? Role-based journeys help you build confidence, broaden your skillset, and work toward Atlassian Certifications.
5. Stay connected. Community-powered learning brings everything together through forums, events, and shared experiences.

🗺️ The Learner Journey (at launch)

Today’s design lays a solid foundation for a scalable and engaging learning experience. At launch, learners can:

• Browse and filter content in the Learning Catalog
• Enroll in a Learning Path or Course
• Engage with rich, interactive Lessons — bite-sized, modular, and beautifully designed

While I can’t speak for the current roadmap, I’m excited about the possibilities! I’d expect to see future enhancements like:

• Keyword search and improved navigation
• Integration with AI services for content recommendations, dynamic learning support, and personalization
• Even more seamless experiences across the Atlassian ecosystem

The foundation is there, and the platform is well-positioned to grow in powerful new ways.

Along with the new unified profile feature, learners can enroll in Atlassian's Community platform and enjoy seamless access to growth and connection with no separate logins, no separate site – it's all seamlessly integrated!

Build this piece of software was like working in a startup within a larger enterprise environment with a lot of options available to build with, and it was a privilege to be part of building something that will help people grow and connect — and I can’t wait to see how it evolves.
